Travel A-Z: K is for Kids
Travelling with kids can be an unforgetable experience both for the parents and the kids — an exciting adventure full of wonderful memories — or a complete debacle with the parents in dire need of a kidless vacation (or therapy) straight afterwards. Much of the secret to getting the first result rather than the second is down to careful planning and being better organised than you may have once been as a kid-free traveller.
Depending on the age of the children problems can range from the near-impossibility of navigating Bangkok footpaths by pram, through to not having a playstation set-up in your beach bungalow.
Plan ahead where possible — contact accommodation beforehand to discuss your needs — be they hot water, hired help or the dreaded playstation. For younger children, consider your child’s typical schedule (for example feeding, napping, sleeping) and try to retain it while travelling.
With the advent of budget airlines to the region, it has become far more affordable to fly from one country to another and within the countries concerned. Look into this as an hour on a plane may be far easier to manage than a twelve hour overnight train trip.
Contact your desired hotels and guesthouses well before arrival and ask for adjoining rooms when possible — be sure to specify that you are arriving with children.
You will find the local people incredibly warm and good with children — particularly the youngest ones. Never hesitate to ask somebody for assistance if you’re stuck for a helping hand.
An excellent resource is Thailand4Kids. While targetted towards Thailand, the advice contained within the ebook is relevant for Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. It is well worth a look.
Another option is to look into taking an organised trip. Gecko Travel runs specialist tours particularly aimed at families.
Lastly, don’t forget to have fun!
