Phuket has long had a bad rap for being one of the most expensive destinations in Thailand, but it need not be that way. Read on for our guide covering many ways backpackers and independent travellers can save money including links to detailed reviews of 18 guesthouses and hotels for less than 600B a night. Read on for more information on doing Phuket on the cheap.
There are quite a lot of less expensive places to stay in Kata and Karon, and plenty of good food on the back roads. Phuket is as cheap as you want it to be. Just remember it’s a big island and getting to some of the nicer places takes time. There are local buses from Phuket town to most areas of the island, but they only run during daylight hours. If the budget can stretch to renting a car, that’s the best for Phuket. In low season you can rent a jeep for 1000 Baht per day, and if you can split between several people, it’s not much. Then you can really explore Phuket and get away from the main beach areas.
