Great writeup of a treking experiance. You've pretty much hit the nail on the head as to why we're not that interested in treking on our SE Asia tour. Once you get to a village how do you communicate with people if no one speaks the language? I'm not one to bring bags of candy or fireworks to entertain children and would prefer to find out about their life.

Also promises of wildlife are usually exagerated. We were deep in Khao Sok in Thailand and didn't see much wildlife while on our 5 hour cage trek or 2 days on the lake. We actually saw a whole family of 14 monkeys outside the park at Arts Guesthouse. He put his Eco lodge right at the watering hole.
